Meeting Challenges of Server Virtualization

Server virtualization is now deemed as a business policy. It helps in increasing efficiency, reduces hardware, infrastructure and IT requirement expenses; makes applications more easily available, improves disaster recovery policies, and effectuates and streamline data backup policies. It is however not easy to be done. Despite the hype that surrounds it, server virtualization demands some efforts. It demands a special set of skills and business policies to determine its effectiveness in an organizational set-up and monitoring virtual environment.

Server Performance Overview

Whether server virtualization is fit for your organization or not, can only be determined after a professional review by an expert consultant. He can also help you formulate comprehensive deployment and implementation methodology and incorporate best practices.

This is a write-up about the challenges that an organization is likely to face during virtualization transition.

Planning and Execution

Most enterprises lack in proper planning and execution policy, which result in increase in cumulative expenses. A proper planning to transit to virtualization set up is therefore necessary. Service of a virtualization consultant can be imperative in such situations. Applications that would be run on the virtualized environment also determine your implementation and management policy.

Distributing Workload

Another challenge faced in virtualization implementation is distribution of workload. Most often servers are underperformed. Smarter workload distribution can help in improving server efficiency without increasing cost. If you are operating on a scalable environment, it is important to determine possible server space requirement effectively for optimization.

Operation Process and Procedure

One of the biggest hindrances that an organization may face in terms of virtualization is its internal operation process. Virtualization would demand certain alteration in organization operation method and is most likely to fail in the most traditional environment. The idea of virtualization is to elevate agility and flexibility and therefore siloed structure must be replaced with an integrated platform.

Security

It can be challenging to expose your mission-critical information and applications on a virtualized ecosystem that is not only hosted outside your organizational set-up but is also managed by a third-party. Devising and implementing comprehensive security strategy is another challenge of achieving server virtualization.

Budget Management

True that virtualization ought to reduce your overall IT expenses but virtualization, itself will incur some expenses. All these would affect you Total Cost of Ownership (TOC) in the long run. If you do not have infrastructure to support virtualization then it might increase your total investment on IT. It is often deemed rational for organizations which have already invested significant amount on virtualization.

Server Monitoring Software Basics

A website hosting server is the brain of your application. It handles all the crucial aspects of your application/website. Keeping this in mind you should always closely keep an eye out for any anomaly arising and react to it to keep your website/application running and to avoid situations mentioned at the start. We've compiled a list of necessary server performance monitoring parameters that will help you have a better idea about the performance and health. Following are basic metrics you should monitor using a server monitoring software.

1. Central Processing Unit of Server

The brain of the server hardware is the CPU i.e Central Processing Unit. The CPU is that part of the system which carries out the instructions programmed in an application which is to be run by the server.  It manages this by carrying out primary mathematical operations like division, multiplication, addition etc along with other arithmetical operations.  If you find your CPU at 100% operation level for several hours than that is a negative point. Depending upon the reason that is causing this spike you should react and try to keep the operation level below 75%.

2. Random Access Memory of Server

Random access memory is a type of data storage chip. A server loads frequently required information in the RAM to improve its speed hence improving the overall speed of the application. RAM is flash technology based device. Adding another RAM is a useful way to increase the performance of the server.

3. Disk of Server

The part of the server hardware that is used to store all the date is called hard disk. It consists of several magnetically charged discs that rotate and have magnetic heads arranged strategically to access the data stored. It is a permanent data storage device and the data is not deleted unless you decide to consciously delete it. Server uses hard disk to temporary store data called as Cache. Low amount of free space available to the server is one of the main reason that causes file fragmentation which affects server performance.

4. Performance issues and hardware faults.

Lastly, these are the hardware components of a server system that you should also monitor to have normal running system.

a). FAN - Moving parts in a server heat up the system due to a phenomenon called eddy currents. Heating of the system above a certain level can damage the system. A fan is provided at pre-determined locations which helps cool down the system by circulating fresh air. RPM i.e. rounds per minute of fan is a parameter that you should always look out for. You should also monitor overall log of fan RPM to prevent a major issue.

b). PSU - Power supply unit, as the name suggests is the system that converts Alternating Current to low-voltage regulated Direct Current for several inner components of the server. Globally, SMPS i.e Switch Mode Power Supply is used. You need to monitor the voltage and amperage to prevent system damage.

c). Temperature - Temperature of the motherboard and overall system is another factor that can cause irreversible damage or it can badly affect your server's performance.

d). Environmental and miscellaneous Components - Other smaller but important factors that you should monitor is the humidity level of the air surrounding the server. Other components to be monitored are Chassis Intrusion Detection, CMOS Battery and Disk Array health.
Conclusion - Optimal server health status and tools used to monitor the performance of the server provide you with complete picture of the server farm. By collecting data from server monitoring tools you can compile a report on the server capacity to achieve higher efficiency.

Performance Monitoring Oversee If Your Infrastructure Functioning is Upright

All the business strategies can go wrong if things do not work on right path. Being a businessman myself and owning a network, I got to be sure that things work properly. I hate running all over chaotically to try and find what is wrong where. Dependence on internet is now growing since more organizations are joining in online activities. Those who follow the policy of keeping happenings within grip, find Server Performance Monitoring tools immensely beneficial.

Business strategies for your online activities require to be supported with right type of plans to take care of all the hardware and software resources used in the infrastructure. These tools help you to be aware of the situations before they arise because of continuous monitoring and tending to the needs on 24x7 service format. The Server Performance Monitoring software are meant to bring forth simple issues, say when your needs have surpassed the existing infrastructure.

I am particular about security issues for my trading activities that go round the year on 24 hours basis. I am concentrating on building my position in local market thereby need strongly monitored customer database including their buying habits. Therefore, I can’t afford my security system to be failing anywhere and count my dependence on Server Performance Monitoring tools to oversee the traffic, operation and usage. Servers execute varied critical operations like TCP, POP3 and more the monitoring tools help ensuring steady performance of their wide ranging services. Network Interface monitoring is another crucial area that I like as a built-in monitoring tool.

The web serving companies have to be always in knowledge of maximum performance or if the performance is going down within the whole matrix of support system like CPU usage. The monitoring can be even within the realms of programs like MySQL data management system.
